October, 2010 Newsletter
Dear Happy Days Families,
The beginning of our new school year has gotten off to a wonderful start! Your children have adjusted so nicely to their new routines in the classroom and everyone seems so happy to be back in school. Children downstairs know how to find their cubbies and hang up their jackets and backpacks. Our letter of the week helps focus their letter recognition. And they are beginning to join in on our morning songs. Our older students upstairs are signing in each morning, writing in their journal books and writing more and more with each lesson. They also are beginning to read predictable books and recognize our weekly sight words.
Both classes are working on weekly themes, with a different theme going on each afternoon. Letters and numbers are taught as they come up within the content. For example, Miss Laura’s class has a cooking class every alternating Tuesday and Wednesday. Miss Laura reads the recipe to the children as she points to each step and draws attention to the various amounts of ingredients needed for each step; such as 2 cups of something or 1/2 bag of something. Miss Tiffany has been teaching all about fire safety. She introduced the letter “Ff” and had her little ones practice writing “F’s on paper. Some themes this month are fire safety, recycling, bats, monsters, Halloween, and the fall. The fire department will be here this Thursday and Friday with their trucks to show the kids. Our full day students have weekly themes as well in the afternoons with an emphasis on math on Mondays and Thursdays, science on Tuesdays and Fridays, and Social Studies on Wednesdays. Literacy activities are mixed in everyday.
We have parent participation in school already! It was wonderful having Sophia’s mommy come in and give a dramatic story telling to Miss Tiffany’s class about a boy and an apple! We appreciate Mrs. Szwed taking the time to enrich our program. Maria’s mommy will be coming in today to hear Maria doing her Star Student presentation in Miss Laura’s class. Parents are always welcome to come in and celebrate a child’s birthday, to share a passion, or talk about a job. Please contact me prior to your child’s birthday to arrange a special visit. We encourage you to read your child’s favorite book to the class and bring in cupcakes or some other treat. We look forward to having you join us on Friday, October 29th at 11:00 AM to celebrate Halloween with us.
Please remember that tuition is due on the 1st of each month. After the 5th of the month there will be a $10 late charge added on. Also, it would be very helpful to have your child’s items labeled (lunch boxes, change of clothes, jackets, etc.).
Thank you so much to all of the parents who attended our Back to School Night on Monday. It was great to see you. Please let me know if you are interested in our Friday Night babysitting program. I will be happy to set that service up again. If you are interested in sending something in for our Halloween party, please see your child’s teacher for the sign up sheet. Also, if you have not done so already, please sign up for a December conference time with your child’s teacher. Our next pizza session begins on Tuesday, October 12th. Please have the form in by Monday. I announced at Back to School Night that when everyone returns from the November week off, our school will have undergone some renovations with new paint and carpeting!
And finally, just a reminder to check every so often on our website, www.happydayspreschoolnj.com, for pictures of your kids in action. We very much appreciate your referrals and give $100 referral awards.
